Build my own skim

Postby KappuhH » Wed Feb 24, 2010 12:56 pm

I want to build my own skim but I don't know which shape is best for me. I want to use it for light wind in flat or a bit choppy conditions.

I want to ride it finless with an option to put fins on in for very choppy conditions or stronger winds. How many fins should I use? And where should I place the fins?

And should I make a concave in the bottom of the skim?

I would make the bottom flat. Somewhere around 50-54" long and 19.5-21.5" wide is perfect. Your best bet is to trace the outline of another skim like Zap or Victoria that you know have a good outline. The concave is best left out. Flat is fast and you need that to get moving in light winds; besides, the board will be difficult to shovit if it has concave. You can always make a sharp rail and sand it down if you feel it's too sharp. You won't want to use fins, but if you must, I would recommend two of them - one near each rail and the tail of the board. Ride the board without fins first, then place them close to under your rear foot near the rail on each side of the board. Make sure they are parallel and have absolutely no toe angle. Most importantly, post pictures when you are done!! Can't wait to see it...
