Postby c.S » Wed Sep 02, 2009 4:56 pm

Hi all,

I hope I´m right here but however ;)

I just started to built my first kiteskimmboard but i´m not shure how the outline should look like. but the board is going to be a simple board with wood, fibre glass & epoxy but no finns probably a pad.

I hope you can help me with the Outline

Which one would you prefer and why No.1 or No.2

Regards from Germany, Christian

p.s. sorry for my bad english

Re: Skimboard Outline Question

The both look a little weird to me. The wide point is way to far back on both of them. A traditional wave skim outline is the ultimate outline i think so if you're not trying something new go for a traditional outline. It's really easy to take an outline from an image with a program like Adobe Illustrator. The outline consist of a single anchor point placed on the widest part of the board. Create only the right or left half of the board, create a copy, flip it and join them together. Finally you round of the nose and the tail.

Here is an example of a Zap skimboard that i saw on http://www.sandskater.co.uk

Hey Christian,

Welcome to Lose the Straps! Thank you for joining us here.

I would have to agree with Yann's thoughts. Your outline looks very non-traditional. With a nose that narrow it will be quite difficult to ride your skim backwards, which is critical for many tricks. Unless you are going for something experimental, and you want to try to see the results of that shape I would not recommend the outlines you have proposed. If this will be your first skim I would go with a more traditional outline like the one Yann posted.

Good luck. I look forward to seeing your finished board!

Yann is spot on. Instead of Adobe illustrator you can use AKU shaper, it's a free board shaping program and it's the shit.

Yes, or if you're into 3D stuff there is also a program called BoardCad that a guy I know has developed. http://boardcad.org/index.php/Main_Page I'm a 2D guy myself so I can't really tell if it's better than AKU shaper.

Side story: I got to see this guy's shaping machine that he made himself. Quite an extraordinary peace of machine. Just design your board in BoardCAD. Put in a piece of foam or a blank in the machine and a day later out pops a complete shape with rocker, tail, rails, concave and everything. Just need to finish sanding to even out the "pixels" and glass it. Imagine having that in your garage! :D Apparently it's shapes a lot more details than the established shaping machines out there. The down side is that it is very slow and takes a full day to finish a board. The last I heard of him he had also developed a scanning machine that lets him scan a board into a 3D model so he can duplicate it in the shaping machine. This board I got is made in that machine http://gubbsurf.se/post/Custom-Chiquita-57.aspx A couple of pictures from his garage here http://www.surfzone.se/forum/showpost.p ... stcount=85

Re: Skimboard Outline Question

Postby c.S » Sun Sep 06, 2009 11:32 am

Here are a couple of pictures and details...

length 54''
width 20''
thickness 1/2''
front rocker 2 3/8'' beginning approximately 20" from the nose
tail rocker 3/8 beginning approximately 14" from the tail
bottom shape is flat

would you change anything which is still changeable in this state? i decided to take a quite big rocker for a skim board because it´s often choppy at my spots...

which pads would you take...but they should be buyable in europe or germany ;) and most of the pads i saw where just for the tail so what about the foot in the middle of the board?

and one last question im going to print the "design" on foil (i hope you get what i mean  ) but i´m not shure if i should put the foil between the wood and laminated glas or to put it on top and cover it with epoxy..by the way i ordered transparent epoxy and hardener so it won´t get a diferent colour than wanted.

Your board looks quite good! Measurements and outline are quite similar to a ride I built and it rocks.

In terms of graphics: I use the "classic" way of printing on thin rice paper, which becomes transparent when laminating. Don't know if the material you want to use causes delamination-problems. You better make a test piece and bend it hard, before you spoil your board.

For the pads, I usually go cheap and put on the gymnastic floor pads from Decathlon, which I treat with a grinder. They are very comfortable and stick better to the feet than any dedicated board pads. Price is 10€ for 120x120cm. Glue with thickened epoxy or 5 minute epoxy.

Another vote for akushaper. You can download a picture of the board online, then use the akushaper program to get your outline. Thanks to this forum, many people have put specs of the boards, and you can input that into akushaper. I export from akushaper into shape3dlite. I like how shape3dlite prints out. You can then trace the printouts onto a board to cut. Worked great for my alaia. Will be building a skim next. My preference for boards lately is leaning towards finless.

Hi everybody,

I had time to finish the paint job on top and on the bottom and I allready laminated everything. This is just a picture of the bottom i cannot turn it yet because it has to dry. But I´m not really happy with the laminated surface it´s not as clean as I wanted...however I hope it´s big fun to ride it :)
