I need a custom board shape'r

Postby Kitesmurf » Sun May 31, 2009 11:16 pm

I'm looking to get something made for me that is a hybrid skim/small surf/light wind type board. A cross between a Nobile skim, Airush Choptop, Underground Freewave, and a Royal Hi-5.

Any good shape'r suggestions?

Thanks,
Droffats

Hey Droffats,

Welcome to Lose the Straps. Thank you for joining. Here are a few good people that I know of or have worked with to make a custom skim.

http://www.dcboardz.com/ - Dereck Camacho
http://www.phase5boards.com/ - Bob Smetts
http://www.roushcreations.com/ - Eric Roush

Any of the guys above could make you an awesome custom skim. I would email them and see who is the best fit for your location, riding style, price, etc. Let us know how it turns out, and upload some pics of your new board when you get it. You could post a review of it here:

Hope that helps,

Lonny

hello mate well... as always i will say writo to eric for a costume made skimboard and tell him exatly what you want but, the board that you are looking for on my opinion is call a dread one and eric does it only by orders. you will find it to be the most amazing board for all conditions.

you can also check the surftech version but i will say to go for a custome.

Well, that didn't go well. I had a shaper try to make me a board that would cover both light wind and small shore dump type waves. (It was not one of the shapers recommended here -- this process started well before I knew about this forum.)

When it was done it showed great promise. It was 90% of everything I wanted in a shape. Too bad I put my heels through it. That was also an opportunity to fix the horrible bottom finish.

So, take two. The shaper tried to rebuild the same board. While the finish improved and it got more durable, it got way heavy and lost some of the bottom shape which made it work. And oh yeah, he forgot to put in the FCS slots for two of the three fins!

I also tried a skim by the same shaper and it was bested by the Nobile while finless. But with fins it was tragic. Where to begin? Damn. Cause that one had excellent built quality.

So what about a plain ol' off the shelf wakesurfer? CWB of Liquid Force?

well mate it looks like it back fire on you...

any how my friend i can give you two options go for a new shaper and i strongly recomend to go from one of the list their boards has being well tested for must of us or buy something that is already made that can sues your need.

check on the ones on http://www.surftech.com the aloha and mega aloha will do for a big guy like yourself. other wise get a quote with a shaper to tell you what works for you.

cheers and good luck

ps: give us a bit more of what you want on a board so we can gide you better. :D

The single board closest to what I'm looking for is the Royal Hi-5. I didn't want to mention it because of the foot straps. Kinda of get me beat up around here talking about straps... But yeah, when it gets windy around here, we don't get waves, we got a A frames and chop, so I'd prefer to put those things on my feet...

Anyone got a builder who can do the Royal Hi-5 without it being so dang ugly?

Hey Stafford,

Sorry to hear about your bad experience with your first board builder. You might want to send a PM to Jon Modica. He has several shapers that he works with, and might be able to give you his feedback. He breaks boards like he is putting on his shoes so I am sure he can give you the lowdown on a builder that has the goods especially focused on the needs of a kiter.
