Buying a used surfboard - 6'0 thruster v 5'10 quad

Postby davejayc » Mon May 10, 2010 12:48 pm

Hi guys,

I'm looking for an opinion on a couple of boards I'm looking at for some strapless wave riding. Waves tend to be fairly small and choppy, ~3-6', but also overhead conditions in the fall I have these two boards in consideration:

The first is a 6'0'' Kane Garden(white) Roundtail shaped by stu kenson, it is made of epoxy foam and is really strong. Only damage is the leash plug broke, and had to be fixed. It is water tight - $200.

The second is a 5'10'' Walker(green and tan) quad, it comes with rainbow fins worth over $100. The board can be set up as a quad or thruster. It is a rare board. Very good condition, minor minor damage. - $350

Any opinions / suggestions? I feel like a quad would be better for kiting but I haven't ridden many boards to know the difference.

Thanks!

I would go with the quad. I have a quad fish that is awesome in the small stuff. The quard fins really shot upwind when powered.

That quad looks rad. Lokbox is my all time favorite fin box and Rainbow makes some sweet fins too.

Hey DC,

Yeah I have to agree, I would go with the quad. Personally I have rarely liked any board longer than 5' 8" or so, and I generally like a quad for mushy crap just because they generate more speed. If they are used perhaps you can get a demo on them for the afternoon and see which one you really like? I ride a 5" 7' S-Quad and just love that board to death. It was run over by FedEx, then repaired, cracked the rail from jumping and repaired again. Just wasted the other rail on South Beach a couple weekend ago - still going strong!!
