A surfboard for kiting and wake surfing

Postby CJCraze » Mon Apr 20, 2009 12:45 pm

Hey all,

It's my first post here, seems like a cool forum.

I'd like to get a new surfboard for small to medium mushy waves with onshore wind and it'd be great if I could also wake surf on it. From what I can tell of the most recent wake surfing designs, they seem to be similarly shaped to a small to medium wave surfboard where extra speed and flotation is a plus. I'm about 190 lbs and 6'3". The placebo surfskate seems like what I'm after. However, I can get a hookup price on the North freestyle fish or any of the Naish boards. I'd be willing to spend the extra cash on the placebo or something else if it was worth it though. Any opinions? I'm definitely no expert when it comes to surfboards.

Thanks,

CJ

I dont know much about the naish boards....but the freestyle fish is a HORRIFIC board. Its really heavy and those foothooks are not doing anyone favors.
plus it comes with the worst of the worst fins.

I recommend the 5'0 or 5'2 surfskate.

ha ha - for some reason that 'horrific' comment made me laugh pretty hard. Guess I'll stay away from that board...

Hey CJ,

Welcome to Lose the Straps! Thank you for joining us here.

LOL - Jon is generally not too reserved or politically correct with his opinions. He will always tell you how he sees it.

I would have to 2cd Jon's thoughts on the Placebo. The board kills small to medium surf, and is a blast to ride around and do freestyle on in flat water. As far as wake surfing with it, I cannot say, but with a kite I do not think you can go wrong. Everyone that has that board loves it. The only downside that I have observed is the durability.

Here is another thread on the surfskate:

Thanks for the replies. I don't see a 5'2" on their site however, it looks like 5'0 or 5'4".

Hey,

I thought I'd post and let you guys know that I finally got a surfskate, and it's killer. I've wake surfed on it behind a mastercraft X2 and the board is awesome for that. Plenty of flotation on the 5'0, and nice and snappy. I've also had a couple sessions on it with a kite, and it's just so much fun. Trying body varials, shove its and airs off the lip are so fun. Plus the other evening it was really light wind and I was way underpowered on my twin tip, so I went and grabbed the surfskate, and I was surprised how good it is in light wind. I had my 12 Torch out and I was riding along quite comfortably - past pretty much everyone else even on bigger kites. And that usually doesn't happen to me since I'm not the lightest rider - 185lbs. Anyway, just thought I'd thank you guys for the advise cause I'm stoked on it.

Hey CJ,

Thank you very much for getting back to tell us about your surfskate decision and experience. A lot of time we give people advice but we never hear the outcome. I am stoked that not only you got a Placebo, but that it was the right fit for your riding style. Now lets see some shots!
