Quads are considered faster, because they do infact have less drag then a thruster setup.
Even though there is more overall fin area, the fin angles are less counterproductive in quads.
In a thruster, all three fins are at different angles. But in a quad, the side fins are the same angle, thus less drag!

So if quad is faster than thruster, why not just remove the trailer if your only ever really in mushy beach break that never gets over 5 foot? Wouldn't that be the least drag, or are quads toed in less than thrusters?

2 fins is less drag than 4, but you lose ALOT of traction.
Thats fine if the wave is under 4ft, but a 4 or 5 ft wave needs more fin!

bit of a kook in waves as its all freshwater stuff but its fun as. Nothing really (actual) 4-5 foot here. Really mushy beach windswell.

For my application, twin works just fine. Nice and skatey in little whitewashy stuff. Have spun out in jybes plenty enough to feel the limitations. Gonna go a little bigger twin set next season for a little more to work against.

Does foil vs flat make any diff in your opinion? flat waters vs actual waves?

And just to keep fins in discussion. Any one see merit to the winglet stuff hitting the fringes o the market these days? It's a kook out discussion, but what the hell, its a forum right?

For kiting i really prefer a flatter fin. It just feels faster and more predictable. Alot of foil will give you more lift, but too much lift is drag in a sense.

I rode the schemitar fins from future for awhile, and it worked GREAT in lighter winds, but just couldnt handle higher speeds.

CALLING JON!!! Jonny boy, can you update us with your choices of fins for thrusters cs quads, stiff boards versus softer boards? Thanks bro.

I'll admit i'm pretty clueless bout fins so I need some learnin.....

I just got a wainman gambler which can be set up as quad or thruster.... In quad mode, the bigger fins go in front the small in back...(correct)
In thruster mode, would I use the front fin boxes or rear?? Smaller fins or the larger ones??

I just started riding surfboards this summer, now thats all I ride..

I have many more questions but i'll stop here for now...

For the quad fins, the big fins go in the front, and in thruster you use the FRONT fin boxes.

Basically, keep the front big fins in for both quad and thruster. Here is a picture that might help.

Would be glad to.

This is my theory. A lot of kiteboarding companies make really stiff boards. I have been riding much more flexible fins lately to help give the boards a little bit more of a lively feel.

To be honest I am still working on finding the perfect quad set up.

For thrusters, here are the three fins I like and for what conditions.

The F3 from futures is my go to small wave fin. It's a bit smaller but has a narrow tip that allows the fin to flex a bit more.

The YU from future is a great all around fin. It's really flexy so it might take getting used to. If I only had one fin for the rest of my life it would be this one. I've been trying to figure out rear fins that work well with it for a quad....but no luck yet.

The Blackstix VII FEA is a fin for good waves. It's a lot stiffer so can handle a bit more speed. I normally wouldn't have bought a set like this, but i borrowed a friends board this summer and thought it went insanely fast with these fins in it. He let me try them in my kiteboard and I was really impressed. I have to keep testing, but I think for anyone who kites in waves over head often, these might be the fins for you!
