Surfboard Recommendation needed for riding light winds

Are you killing it on your surfboard? Have a question about riding styles or a trick? What surfboards work, what doesn't. This is the place to talk about your surfboard gear.

Surfboard Recommendation needed for riding light winds

Postby Lmrutledge » Sat Jan 17, 2009 12:03 pm

I am 6 ft 5 and weigh 235lbs. Ride in Atlantic around Daytona Beach. What would be a good FIRST surfboard to have for my size and height to learn to jibe etc. I am not looking to slash wave faces etc. Just to have fun with smaller kite if that's possible with my size. Thanks in advance for the input.

Hey LMR,

Welcome to Lose the Straps. Thank you for joining!

Surfboards are not my area of specialty, but your weight and size is certainly no reason why you cannot rip it strapless on your first surfboard. I give you credit for wanting to choose your first surfboard without straps, and that is an achievement in itself. 8) I messaged a few of the more surf oriented boys to see if they can give you their opinions.

By the way? How did you find us?

Lawrence! It's Todd here. I have to say that at your weight, you want to go for at least a 6'0" or bigger board. The SQuad 6'1" is super nice and is built tougher than a regular surfboard, but even a regular surfboard will do. Get something that's not too parallel and try to pick a "fast" board. If it's too bent (i.e. too much rocker), then it will defeat the light air purpose... Good luck! Enjoy!

A 6'1 S-squad will be a pretty decent board for you. With your weight i would definitely go quad fin. way less drag.
I would say go for a wider tail surfboard, but with your weight not many are going to hold up too long. Go for the S-quad or wider!!

good luck!

I am a big fan of riding boards that are also really fun to surf. I've had a lot of fun in light stuff on my 5'7" Larry Mabile Twinzer, which is also one of my absolute favorite boards to surf. I am 6'2", 175.....for comparison purposes

also here is a great site to get lost in for all those fish lovers. Would love to kite on a mini simmons...anybody tried?
