New to skimming

Howdy Mates,

I'm an east coast canadian. Not many people out here kitesurf, let alone strapless kitesurf.

I've got some practice riding strapless, mostly on a 6'0 thruster. I've got a skim board in the mail, and am totally stoked.

I'm about 80kg, 6'4". My skim is 58x22" (or 147x56cm). I mostly want to use it for light winds and in small waves.
One question: How is the size? Did I go too big? (is there such thing for light winds??)

What size skims are most people kiting with?

Cheers,
DC

That should be fine for you. Don't get frustrated, it takes time to dial in a new board. I thought I would never be able to transition without falling, then it happened. Now I'm trying aerials and riding chest to head high surf. I may never master the skim, but I'm sure gonna try!

Hey DC,

Welcome to Lose the Straps! Thank you for joining!

I think you will find your new skim not too be too large at all - especially for your first board. Eventually you might get something slightly smaller, but right now you just want to get the feel using a skimboard. Since you are going mainly for light wind right now you will want a little extra length and width. Hopefully your skim has a relatively moderate rocker profile. We have a lot of good information on what other people are riding here:
